Mimbres Pottery
Mimbres pottery is found in Southwest New Mexico and Southeastern Arizona. It was left behind more than 1,000 years ago by the indians who lived in this area. It is a white potter with black markings that is often incised with triangular marks. There are shards all over the ground in many places.
Like Pre-Columbian pottery, Mimbres pottery is often illegally collected from old ruins.
In my opinion, its principle value is to provide inspiration for modern potters. The old Mimbres motifs are frequently seen on modern pots. A check on Ebay supports this. There are a variety of books about the Mimbres people and Mimbres culture but the bulk of the items for sale are jewelry, textiles, and other art work that make use of the old Mimbres symbols.
We were never able to collect intact Mimbres pots, but have some shards and some modern pieces made in the Mimbres style. I will be adding photographs and descriptions of these items as time permits.
